Amelia Mary

Meet Amelia Mary:

This is my daughter. She’s been alive for approximately 22 weeks at the time this ultrasound image was captured (4/24/2012). Isn’t she beautiful? I’m quite sure she’s smiling at me, too. She is my eighth child. My first two children are with the Lord and my seventh child is with the Lord. Amelia is number eight. 3,4,5, and 6 are sleeping in their rooms right now.

How is it that so many in the world would deny Amelia the choice of life? She is clearly an individual despite the fact that she is entirely dependent on her mother. If anything, her complete dependence should justify the need for her defense. If I might borrow a phrase from Scripture and take it out of context, “Does not nature itself teach you” that every person is created with the will to live? We may have faith in the Lord Jesus for our salvation and know that when our time is complete we will rest forever in the perfect presence of our Savior (John 3:16, etc.), but under normal circumstances every one of us would live on right here in this world if we could. When something is wrong with our bodies, we visit the doctor. When we sense we’re in danger, we seek shelter and if necessary we defend ourselves. Without much of a thought to it, we simply want to live. And so, too, does Amelia along with every baby living inside his or her mother’s womb. The will to live is an essential part of this physical life we share. Indeed, when in those cases an individual loses that will to live, implicitly, even the world understands there is something seriously wrong. Or else why all the hotlines? (See this post for further comments.) Yet when it comes to a baby before he or she can express with words that most natural will to live, some would deny that child his or her own choice. How twisted we have become.

I don’t do politics here on sheepfood. I simply don’t care what your theory on the proper role of government is or if you think my taxes should be lower or higher. But I will say this. It is utterly shameful that the life of a baby has become a debate. Every life is valuable and God alone has the authority to give it or take it (e.g., Job 2:6). We don’t rightfully have that choice to make. We simply don’t. And for the record, there are laws on the books in every country of the world as far as I know against the killing of another human being without legitimate cause. So what’s the debate about anyway? I just don’t get it.

“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well” (Psalm 139:14).
